UPDATE: 30 March 2009: This post is getting a lot of traffic lately, so it is worth updating you that Jan at Mobileways has just released a brand new twitter client called Gravity.
It has a great range of features. You can grab a trial version and play with it – but I suspect you will buy it as it is a feature rich symbian S60 3rd edition application.
Gravity has a number of cool features, namely:
• Compatible with Twitter and Laconica AND now Foursquare
• All functions available on your S60 phone: tweet, reply, DM, follow & unfollow, create favourites, search, auto-update and many more …
• Tabbed view of your Timeline, Replies, Messages, Friends, …
• Setup and use as many accounts as you want at the same time
• Twitter-Search section with multiple search tabs and Twitter Trends
• Post pictures via TwitPic
• Open URLs from any Tweet
• Kinetic scrolling on S60v5 ( Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97 )
• Theme support on S60v3 ( fixed dark and bright theme )
If you are looking for a web only client for your mobile, you can’t go past Dabar – www.dabr.co.uk
You should also have a look at a great review of Symbian twitter applications (including gravity) at Symbian Guru – well worth a read.
My original post from September 6 2008 continues below which explains the precursor to Gravity – WirelessIRC + Twitter which Gravity now replaces.
As both a mobile evangelist and keen twitter user, I have been searching for the best mobile twitter client – and had not had much luck until now.
The m.twitter.com web version of twitter is ok, and I have also tried java clients such as tiny twitter but they have not given me the mobile twitter experience I was after.
All that changed when I came across German mobile developer mobileways. Their WirelessIRC + twitter client is native Symbian 60 3rd edition, is well built, and fits the bill perfectly.
It even enables the posting of URLs to delicious.com.
While the core product has been built around an IRC client, Ole from Mobileways tells me there has been a strong demand for a revised twitter client, so we should expect to see an even better version soon!
As the screenshot shows below, you can see the full tweet, the URLs, photo of the contact, their name etc. It enables simple replies, and can be set up for auto refresh. It even has a feature where the latest tweet can appear as a bubble on all screens at the top left – very neat indeed.
If you want to use twitter on your mobile, and have a Symbian phone then you need WirelessIRC + Twitter. You can download a demo version – or why not purchase the full version at their website.
Mobileways also have a range of other products for Symbian, such as remote professional which allows you to project what is happening on your mobile phone screen onto your PC – and hence to much larger audience for presentations and demonstrations.
If like me you need to regularly show what is happening on a mobile screen to more than a few people at a time, you need this superb application. Ole has provided me with a sneak preview of their next version – which can show a mobile screen on a webpage anywhere in the world – direct from the mobile.
They have taken care of the finer details such as having a skin available for latest Symbian devices so what you see on the laptop is exactly what you are seeing on the phone. You can even control the phone via the laptop – a very handy feature for demonstrating in front of large numbers of people.
Perhaps with this application we will see the death of the poorly lit tabletop camera to the phone experience for software demos.
Well done mobileways – this is seriously good Symbian software.
