London Calling: new name, new look, new location but still providing great commentary on mobile advertising, location and social networking
Welcome to London Calling, the new name of my blog with thoughts on mobile advertising, mobile location, local search and social networking.
Why the name? As an Australian now based in London, I was used to many TV programs that used the line “london calling” when referring to long distance international calls to Australia. When I call my parents in Adelaide each week to update them on life in the capital, I also use the phrase so they know it is me calling.
It therefore seemed appropriate for someone based in London, commenting on the on the mobile scene to call the blog London Calling. You can also access this blog via www.london-calling.org.uk
The most significant change to my old blog is that it is now built using wordpress. WordPress provides both a free hosted blog at wordpress.com as well as the code to do it yourself at wordpress.org.
I’ve chosen the latter approach and installed the open source code on my andrewgrill.com website. If you’re considering this yourself, I can recommend this approach – if you have all the pre-requisites (eg own host, mySQL database etc) then it is literally a 5 minute process. The options available from wordpress are almost endless and so it can take many hours after that to get the blog looking and feeling right.
WordPress supports 3rd party templates, and after much auditioning, I settled on Futurosity Vero 0.4 by Robert Ellis from futurosity. Not only do I believe this is a very clean template, it also has some great functionality that I know regular readers of the blog will appreciate. Thanks Robert.
One of the main drivers behind the move was so that I could create a mobile friendly version of the blog. Thanks to Andy Moore, and his fantastic wordpress mobile plugin my blog is now mobile friendly, allowing me to walk the talk! This means that anyone accessing the blog on a mobile device will automatically see a mobile friendly version of the site thanks to Andy’s nifty plugin.
I have also added a few new sections, such as a blogroll, and I will also add some more useful web links related to the postings on this blog over the coming weeks.
Readers subscribed by RSS should see no changes, as the feedburner feed address stays the same. I’m going to progressively move all the old posts over here, and also provide redirects on each story to the new posts, but new posts will appear at www.andrewgrill.com/blog from today.
Thanks for the continued support from all readers of this blog and I hope you continue to enjoy the posts.
