I was sitting at a Café in Munich with my wife and my son, when suddenly we hear an explosion. 5 mins later smoke was coming up from behind the building. A guy stood up and ran to see what was happening - "An ambulance just exploded". Since I watch too much 24, I decided that was time for us to go (an ambulance is the perfect disguise for a biological attack). Anyway, we left and of course by then the whole place was surrounded by police, ambulances, firemen..you name it. They were there in 10 mins flat after the explosion(very impressive). However no news about it. So I search on twitter and sure enough a couple of guys reported that has been an accident and that everyone was fine. They even said it was kinda boring... At night checked on the news (TV) nothing. Internet...Nothing, Newspaper next morning...Nothing...Twitter...23 people reported seeing the explosion and how it went...

You're dead right about status + location being huge, especially on mobile. There are some interesting Twitter location apps coming out for the iPhone at the moment - there'll be an article about this up on All About iPhone shortly, from someone who knows what she's talking about :) http://bit.ly/KEcz

Spot on Andrew: that local search + real time micro-blogging is the next killer app for mobile. Questions: How to differentiate and How to improve signal:noise ratio? As BizDev guy for buzzd.com, a new service that makes users post contextually to where they are at, and aggregates these 'buzzes' with events syndicated from top-down editorial sources like Time Out, I spent much of last year dissing Twitter for lack of relevancy. Now that its Search is kicking in, I ain't so sure no more.

I totally agree with your point regarding the local restaurant recommendation and I think that Twitter disruptive potential is not in the "real-time search engine" but in the ability to crowdsource your searches to your followers.

In case of mainstream adoption, Twitter could move the focus from "web search" to "social recommendation" as the primary way to influence purchasing decisions online.

Conclusion: In Twitter world, display and search advertising are less relevant but word of mouth marketing is more relevant.
